Twitter users mocked the empty polling stations on the first day of parliamentary elections by using Twitter to present themselves as alternative candidates.
The popular #TwitterParliament was launched by the users to satirize the weak turnout, which stood at 16 percent of registered voters, as declared by the Cabinet.
“Let's show them how many young people there are and see how many tweets they can write in response,” @Salamonty wrote, referring to a widely-observed absence of young voters from the polls. “Let's take part in the Twitter Parliament and let everyone introduce his platform and see who wins at the end of the day.”
Another user, @masriarabi, wrote, “I promise to run sounder elections and to dissolve the parliament if results do not appeal to me.”
