In a historic precedent, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow has named the Egyptian scientist Professor Hany Eteiba as its president for the next 12 months – the first time the college has ever elected a non-English Professor to the top post.
The news follows the College’s 2023 Executive Board and Council elections, which elected a new Honorary Secretary, Vice President (Medical), Vice President (Surgical) and four Ordinary and Regional Councillors.
Who is Eteiba?
Professor Eteiba has served the college for more than 20 years. He has held posts including President of the Scottish Cardiac Society, Associate Medical Director of the Golden Jubilee, and Honorary Professor at the University of Glasgow.
He obtained Bachelor of Medicine in 1979 from Cairo, after which he specialized in interventional cardiology. He has a regular presence in scientific conferences on interventional cardiology research.
He also hosts many scientific conferences on ischemic heart disease and interventional management of late coronary syndrome.
Eteiba holds a Fellowship of the American College of Cardiology, a Fellowship of the American Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions (SCAI), and a member of the British Cardiovascular Society, the British Society for Cardiovascular Intervention, the Scottish Heart Association, and the Scottish Society of Physicians.
