Egyptian, Saudi FMs stress importance of containing tensions, preventing escalation in region

CAIRO, Feb 3 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on Tuesday stressed the importance of containing regional tensions and preventing escalation.

They underlined the need to intensify efforts to achieve calm and prioritize political and diplomatic channels in addressing crises, in order to spare the region from renewed instability.

The remarks were made during a meeting in Riyadh as part of ongoing consultation and coordination between the two countries.

The ministers reaffirmed the depth and special nature of the fraternal relations between Cairo and Riyadh, and their shared commitment to strengthening the existing partnership and building on its momentum to serve the aspirations of the peoples of both nations.

They also stressed that the region’s challenges require collective Arab efforts and sustained consultation and coordination among Arab states, which constitute a cornerstone for safeguarding Arab national security amid ongoing crises.

The meeting addressed developments in the Gaza Strip, with both ministers underscoring the importance of implementing the second phase of US President Donald Trump’s plan, supporting the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza (NCAG), rapidly deploying the international stabilization force to monitor the ceasefire, ensuring unhindered humanitarian access, and preparing the ground for early recovery and reconstruction.

The situation in Sudan was also discussed. The ministers stressed the importance of continued joint coordination, expediting a humanitarian truce as a precursor to a comprehensive ceasefire, and launching a political process with full Sudanese ownership.

Abdelatty also stressed the need to preserve Sudan’s unity, territorial integrity, and national institutions.

On the Iranian nuclear file, Abdelatty stressed the importance of adhering to diplomatic channels and creating favorable conditions to resume dialogue between the United States and Iran.

The aim is to reach a comprehensive and balanced agreement that addresses the interests and concerns of all parties, strengthens regional and international security and stability, reduces the risk of escalation, and fosters sustainable de-escalation and confidence-building, he added. (MENA)
