Egyptian police kills armed robbery gang in clashes at Sokhna Road

Members of a gang specialized in armed robbery were killed in a battle with police on the Ain Sokhna Road, a statement from Egypt’s Interior Ministry said on Tuesday.

According to the statement, security services targeted the gang after reports that a group of masked men riding a white car fired shots at a civilian in his car, at a residential compound in Teseen Street at Cairo, Fifth Settlement.

The civilian successfully escaped unharmed.

Police also received a report that the gang fired shots at a truck driver nearby, injuring him with a bullet in the right-leg and stealing his money before fleeing the scene.

The ministry said that the Criminal Investigations team was tipped that the robber’s vehicle was on Ain Sokhna Road. Mobile checkpoints were set up to catch them before they got away.

In their escape the robber’s car hit a concrete barrier, forcing them to abandon it as they attempted to flee into the desert. During the chase, they shot back at the police, resulting in a retaliation which wiped out the entire gang.

Police Investigations found that three of the suspects held criminal records for unlicensed weapons possession, drugs, and forced robbery.

The Interior Ministry said that police discovered two automatic guns, one rifle, and ammunition from the dead gang.

The necessary legal measures were taken, and the case has been referred to the Public Prosecution’s office for further investigations.
