Egyptian PM appoints new Competition Authority chairman

Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif has appointed Sameh al-Torgoman chairman of Egypt's Competition Authority for a four-year term. Al-Torgoman succeeds Mona Yassin, who has reached retirement age, to the post.

Al-Torgoman previously worked for both Egypt's Public Prosecution and the judiciary before serving as president of the Egyptian Stock Exchange for several years. Most recently, he served as president of Egypt's Real Estate Finance Authority.

Trade and Industry Minister Rachid Mohamed Rachid reportedly sent a letter to Yassin on the occasion of her retirement, in which he thanked her for her excellent work over the last five years and for her efforts training professional cadres of human resources.

Under Yassin, the Competition Authority uncovered numerous cases of monopolistic practice by cement companies, against many of which the judiciary later issued legal rulings.
