The Egyptian Cabinet’s Media Center on Monday denied social media rumors claiming that the new coronavirus strain found in India has been detected in Egypt.
The Ministry of Health and Population also denied the news, explaining that Egypt has an epidemiological monitoring program that is closely monitoring the virus, and if the strain were to appear, infection control and treatment plans would be set into motion.
The ministry is keen to conduct genetic tracing of the coronavirus, especially for those coming from the affected countries with genetic mutations to prevent its entry into the country, the ministry said.
It called on the public to ignore such rumors, as they simply aim to create panic.
The government has tightened security at all of Egypt’s entry ports since the emergence of the new strain of the virus.
