Navy Commander-in-Chief Mohab Mamish on Thursday said his forces would help secure polling stations during upcoming parliamentary elections slated for November.
Mamish, a member of Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, made the statement at a press conference in Alexandria on the occasion of the anniversary of the Egyptian Navy.
“The naval forces are now making all the necessary preparations to secure polling stations," he said. However, he did not elaborate on how his forces planned to carry out the task.
Mamish went on to say he had the utmost confidence in "the successful completion of the elections, as was the case during the referendum on constitutional amendments (in March), which the navy helped secure in the coastal cities."
“The upcoming elections will have a high level of integrity and transparency which Egypt is not accustomed to,” he said.
In a statement to Al-Masry Al-Youm on Sunday, Minister of Local Development Mohamed Ahmed Attiya predicted that the elections will witness skirmishes between supporters of competing candidates in a number of constituencies.
Attiya said his ministry began preparing for the formation of government-backed popular committees nationwide, whose role will be to also help secure upcoming parliamentary elections.
