Egyptian ministers to meet Zenawi to discuss Nile basin problem

Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit and International Cooperation Minister Fayza Abul Naga will visit Addis Ababa on Wednesday to meet with Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi.

Egyptian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hossam Zaki said the ministers will also address the Nile Basin problem in light of a separate agreement signed by five countries in the region, including Ethiopia, to redistribute Nile water quotas.

They will also discuss the upcoming Sudanese referendum which will decide on whether Southern Sudan becomes independent. Egypt and Ethiopia both support efforts by the African Commission to mediate between the Sudanese National Congress Party and the Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement.

The ministers will also discuss ways to end clashes between the Somali government and opposition factions in order to achieve stability for the country.

In a related development, a delegation of the Egyptian Fund for Technical Cooperation with Africa traveled on Tuesday to Juba, the capital of Southern Sudan, to supply logistical aid and inspect projects financed by the fund.
