The government has approved a draft law for the formation of temporary councils to replace the local councils dissolved by a court order last month, said Minister of Local Development Mohsen al-Nomani.
Nomani told reporters on Thursday that the cabinet presented the draft law to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. Nomani did not reveal how the government proposed to select the members of these temporary councils.
On 28 June, the Administrative Court of Egypt's State Council ruled that all local councils nationwide must be disbanded, following a number of lawsuits from activists claiming that remnants of the now-dissolved National Democratic Party continued to control 98 percent of the councils.
