An Egyptian man was fatally shot by police in the Italian city of Rimini on New Year’s Eve after attacking several people with a knife, according to Italian media.
The Italian newspaper Il Post reported on Wednesday that the motives behind the attack are still unknown.
The 18-year-old man allegedly stabbed five people in the street.
According to the report, the suspect initially attempted to stab a boy who was withdrawing money from an ATM, then assaulted another person on the street, and finally attacked an elderly couple and a young woman.
While none of the five victims suffered fatal injuries, one young man sustained serious wounds.
Following the attacks, a police patrol intervened, firing a warning shot into the air before fatally shooting the Egyptian man, according to the officers’ account.
