Egyptian legal expert Sherif Bassiouni will head the committee of experts that will probe the violence in Libya, said Sihasak Phuangketkeow, the president of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Friday.
The UNHRC has also appointed another two experts as members of the committee: Asmaa Qader from Jordan and Phillip Kirsch, a Canadian who worked as a judge at the International Criminal Court.
On 25 February, the UNHRC called for an independent investigation committee led by the UN to go to Libya to see whether any incidents could be labeled crimes against humanity, after Libyan leader Muammar Qadhafi used his air force to attack the anti-regime protesters.
The same decision by Qadhafi led to the suspension of Libya's membership of the UNHRC. The committee is expected to submit is report to the UNHRC's upcoming session in June.
Phuangketkeow said the members selected for the committee have a good reputation, are well-qualified and very objective.
Bassiouni was previously chosen as a member of the committee formed by of the UN Security Council to investigate war crimes in Yugoslavia, besides working as a UN expert on Afghanistan.
