Egyptian expats in UK urge govt to protect places of worship

The Egyptian Association in the United Kingdom (EAUK) has called on the Egyptian government to "do all it can" to protect Muslim and Christian places of worship in the wake of the Alexandria church bombing that killed 21 people.

A statement issued by the association on Monday condemned the attack, which also injured dozens of people and sparked nationwide protests.

Mostafa Ragab, the chair of the association, said the bombing made the first day of the New Year a sad one for Egyptians everywhere.

He added that Egyptians in the UK stand by their fellow Egyptians and express their sympathy for the victims' families

The statement also urged Egypt's interior minister to uphold the principles of religious freedom as stipulated in the Egyptian constitution.

The association expressed willingness to cooperate with authorities, if called upon, to promote diversity and equality in order to curb terrorist acts, which it said seek to disrupt Egypt's national unity and destabilize the country.
