Egyptian expats call for right to vote

The National Association for Change and other groups representing Egyptians living in the United States have asked the Supreme Council of Armed Forces, Prime Minister Essam Sharaf and Deputy Prime Minister Yehia al-Gamal to allow Egyptians living abroad to cast votes in all elections.

In a petition they sent on Tuesday, the groups referred to certain articles of the 1971 Constitution that have been suspended, such as Article 62 on citizens’ right to vote, Article 40 on equality among all citizens in terms of rights and duties, and Article 25 on citizens’ right to temporary or permanent emigration.

They also called for Egyptian ambassadors abroad to hold ballots at embassy or consulate premises to allow expatriates the ability to cast votes, either with identification cards or passports.
