The Egyptian Embassy in Tunisia resolved the situations of three Egyptian sailing boats that were detained several months ago for illegally entering Tunisian waters and sailing there without permission.
Egyptian Ambassador to Tunisia Ahmed Ismail Abdel Moety said Tunisian authorities responded to requests of the Egyptian Embassy’s defense team to reduce fines imposed on sailors of the “Abu Ahmed al-Gabarty” boat to the minimum rate stated in Tunisian law, so the boat owners could afford to pay it and restore their boat.
The embassy also agreed with Tunisian authorities to expedite procedures to collect the military fine imposed on sailors of the “Youssef al-Keelany” boat, which struck a Tunisian military boat, the ambassador said.
Abdel Moety said the embassy had managed to ease the penalty of attempting to sink the military ship, an accusation that would have led to a harsh penalty.
“The Egyptian Embassy is following up on the request submitted by the embassy’s lawyer to appeal the ruling issued against the ‘Mohamed and Hassan’ boat and reduce the fine imposed on it,” he added.
