Egyptian embassy says security reports are rumors

The Egyptian embassy in Berlin said it has been following with dismay the attempts of getting the country involved in issues that have nothing to do with the nature of the embassies’ work abroad, especially news reported by social media platforms and news websites over submitting security reports on some Egyptian figures while being in Germany.

“Claims and accusations are nothing but calamity, which indicates malicious intentions against the reputation of state institutions, including the Foreign Ministry and its embassies abroad,” the embassy said in a statement on Monday.

“The embassy reaffirms that orders of arrest or placing names on watchlists and others are taken at the exits and issued by judicial authorities in accordance with considerations by state securities,” the statement said, confirming that it was not informed about the investigation with some figures on arrival to Germany except through the media.

Activists earlier blamed the embassy for sending security reports that recommend preventing German-based researcher Atef Botros from entering Egypt through Cairo International Airport on Friday.

Botros is a researcher and teacher of Arabic at the Philipps-Universität of Marburg. He co-founded the Berlin-based Mayadin al-Tahrir, a "network for political education and liberal art in Egypt."

Sources close to journalist Ismail al-Iskandarany accused the embassy of getting involved in his arrest upon his arrival to Egypt in November after he gave several lectures in Europe that were allegedly critical of the Egyptian government.
