Egyptian athlete takes gold at Modern Pentathlon World Cup

Egyptian Pentathlete Amr al-Gezeiry has won the gold medal during the first stage of the 2016 International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) World Cup, held in Moscow, according to a statement on Thursday from Military Spokesperson Mohamed Samir.

Gezeiry, who plays for Talaei al-Geish club, was participating with the Egyptian national team composed of three players.

“As more than 10,000 spectators were watching, the Egyptian team was able to grab the gold medal from the Russian team, making a total of 4,473 points, with a difference of 300 points from his contender,” he said.

“The Egyptian team included Amr al-Gezeiry, Omar al-Gezeiry, who plays for Talaei al-Geish Club, along with Yasser Hefny, Shams Club player.”

“The second joy came when Amr and Omar al-Gezeiry qualified to take part in the Olympic games in Brazil, which is the first time in the history of pentathlon that two brothers have taken part in an Olympic competition,” Samir said on Facebook.

He said that these recent sporting successes were in large part due to the support offered by the Egyptian military.
