Egyptian activists call for unemployment marches

Egyptian activists on Wednesday urged the unemployed to stage marches in downtown Cairo Friday.

The Facebook page "For All the Unemployed" said the march will head to Tahrir Square at 4 pm on Friday from the High Court of Justice located in downtown Cairo.

Another march in Alexandria will head to al-Qa’ed Ibrahim Square at 2 pm from Mansheyya Square, according to the page.

The movement urges million-strong protests in support of the unemployed, describing the issue as part and parcel of social justice.

The Egyptian Social Youth Union announced on its Facebook page that it would help organize the demonstrations.

Union member Hassan Abdel Barr cited unemployment as a major problem in Egypt and said that millions of the people have neither work nor fixed sources of income.

“We feel that [Prime Minister] Essam Sharaf’s government did nothing for the unemployment problem. It’s the same of former Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif’s government that favored businessmen over regular citizens,” said Abdel Barr, who recently became unemployed himself.
