Egypt has welcomed news that Iraqi political parties have reached an agreement to resolve the political crisis faced in forming a government for more than eight months, and that all parties have agreed on the distribution of leadership positions.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abu al-Ghait said in a statement that Egypt supports all steps towards achieving stability and development in Iraq so long as they originate from an Iraqi national process which takes into account the electoral gains of different blocs. He expressed his hope that this agreement will realize the aspirations of the Iraqi people and put Iraq on the road to restoring its regional and international status.
Al-Ghait added that Egypt appreciates the flexibility that all parties have shown despite the difficulties that the process has faced from the beginning. He said that this flexibility has led to consensus and the formation of a unified national government that represents the full spectrum of Iraqi society.
The Foreign Minister expressed his hope that negotiations on the formation of the government will be completed as quickly as possible without any obstacles and in a fashion that ensures continued acceptance in the international community.
