Egypt welcomes Canada and Malta’s intention to recognize a Palestinian state

Egypt has welcomed the announcement by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela of their countries’ intention to recognize a Palestinian state.

In a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt affirmed that this accelerating international momentum toward recognizing a Palestinian state is a historic step.

It contributes to the realization of the Palestinian state that Egypt and other Arab nations have long called for, in an effort to restore the legitimate and inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.

Egypt renewed its call to all countries that have not yet recognized a Palestinian state to move quickly to take this step.

It views such a move as a way to stand on the right side of history and as a contribution toward implementing the two-state solution, which would ensure the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

This announcement comes just days following President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement that France will recognize Palestine in September at the UN General Assembly. Moreover, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated the UK is planning to recognize Palestine in September unless Israel takes “substantive steps” toward peace.
