Egypt warns of harsh penalties for anyone who defaces artifacts, including LE500,000 fine

Law #117 of 1983 on the Protection of Antiquities stipulates several penalties to preserve archaeological sites and any collectibles that carry historical and archaeological value – especially against erroneous practices carried out by some visitors at the archaeological areas.

The major penalties are as follows:

1. Imprisonment for a period not exceeding seven years, and a fine of no less than LE500,000 for anyone who intentionally demolishes an antiquity.

2. Imprisonment for a period not exceeding seven years and a fine of no less than LE500,000 for anyone who willfully destroys a movable or immovable antiquity.

3. Writing phrases on antiquities with the intent of distorting it exposes the person to the aforementioned penalties.

4. Rigorous imprisonment and a fine of no less than LE500,000 for the crime of excavation if the accused is an employee of the Ministry of Antiquities.
