Egypt voices concern over escalating violence in eastern DR Congo

Egypt has expressed deep concern over the worsening security and humanitarian situation in the eastern provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), urging an immediate halt to hostilities and adherence to ceasefire agreements.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent condolences to the families of United Nations peacekeepers who lost their lives, as well as to the governments of South Africa and Uruguay, following recent violence in the region.

It also reaffirmed its support for the African Union and regional efforts to defuse the crisis and promote stability. Meanwhile, the Egyptian Embassy in Kinshasa is closely monitoring the safety of Egyptian nationals in Goma, urging them to avoid high-risk areas and remain cautious.

The DRC is experiencing intensified conflict in its eastern regions, primarily due to the resurgence of the M23 rebel group. Since 2022, M23 has seized significant territories, including areas around Goma, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis with widespread displacement and human rights abuses. Since Sunday evening, gunfire has been heard across Goma, a city with over 700,000 internally displaced people living on its outskirts.
