CAIRO, Nov 20 (MENA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs Badr Abdelatty held a phone talks on Thursday with UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs Yvette Cooper on means of boosting bilateral relations, as well as the latest developments regarding the Palestinian cause and the situation in Sudan.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Tamer Khalaf said the two ministers discussed ways to advance bilateral relations across various fields, with a focus on economic, trade and investment cooperation, in addition to the energy and transport sectors.
The talks also covered developments related to the Palestinian cause as Abdelatty underscored the need for coordinated international efforts to ensure the implementation of the latest UN Security Council resolution, in a manner that supports the consolidation of the ceasefire in line with the Sharm El Sheikh Peace Agreement and contributes to restoring security and stability.
The top diplomat stressed the importance of the swift deployment of the international stabilization force in Gaza in accordance with the Security Council resolution and within the framework of peacekeeping operations.
He also highlighted the need to ensure the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to alleviate the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza.
The minister reiterated the unity of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, affirming Egypt’s rejection of any attempts to divide the territories. He expressed hope for the UK’s participation as a partner in the International Conference on Reconstruction and Early Recovery in Gaza, which Egypt will host.
The call also addressed the situation in Sudan, with both ministers exchanging views and assessments on the latest developments.
Abdelatty reviewed Egypt’s efforts within the framework of the Quad Mechanism to support de-escalation and achieve a ceasefire, reaffirming the importance of coordinated regional and international action to create conditions conducive to launching an inclusive political process that preserves Sudan’s unity, sovereignty and stability.
He emphasized the need to support the Sudanese people, assist national institutions, and work towards securing a comprehensive humanitarian truce and the delivery of humanitarian assistance.
For her part, Cooper highlighted the importance of Egypt’s role within the Quad Mechanism and stressed the need for continued consultations to reduce escalation and achieve a humanitarian truce in Sudan. (MENA)
