Khaled abu Zeid, regional manager of water resources at the Center for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE), called for creating a specialized database in all Nile Basin countries to identify every country’s use of the resources provided by the river.
During the Arab League session, held on the sidelines of the World Water Forum in South Korea, Abu Zeid said that Egypt and Sudan use no more than four percent of the river resources.
He added that the upstream countries believe that the historic agreements of the Nile Basin were signed during colonial times and that they hinder cooperation among them. He also added that they are mistaken to believe that Egypt and Sudan use all of the Nile water, which in turn prevents cooperation over developing the unexploited Nile water resources.
