Egypt shifts October 6 holiday to Thursday, October 9

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has issued a decree announcing the postponement of the Sixth of October holiday this year.

The official paid holiday will now be observed on Thursday, October 9, instead of the original date, Monday, October 6.

This move will create a continuous three-day weekend (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday), with employees returning to work on Sunday.

The holiday commemorates the 52nd anniversary of the Sixth of October War, the conflict during which Egypt successfully regained Sinai from Israel’s occupation.

The war began on Saturday, October 6, 1973, with a coordinated attack by the Egyptian and Syrian armies on Israeli forces stationed in Sinai and the Golan Heights.

The war officially concluded with a ceasefire agreement signed between the Arab and Israeli sides at the end of the day on October 24.
