Egypt shadow parliament to hold opening session on Sunday

The “popular parliament” launched by opposition leaders will hold its opening session on Sunday, 30 January, the parliament’s preparation committee announced on Sunday.

The opening session will be held at the headquarters of the opposition Ghad Party, which is headed by Ayman Nour.

Popular parliament spokesman Alaa Abdel Moneim told Al-Masry Al-Youm that during a meeting on Sunday, the preparation committee decided on 30 January as the date for the opening session.

He explained that during the session the members will elect the parliament’s president and his cabinet which will consist of three MPs, a General Secretary, an Assistant General Secretary, and an official spokesperson.

When asked who will be elected as president, Abdel Moneim said no one has announced their intention to run for president of the parliament and that he himself would not be running for the position.
