Egypt seeks to import wheat from Turkey

Egypt is looking to import wheat from Turkey in addition to other sources, the Asharq Business website reported the head of the General Authority for Supply Commodities in Egypt Hossam al-Garahy as saying on Monday.

One of the world’s largest wheat importers, Egypt increased its wheat imports by 28.3 percent during the first half of this year, due to the recent availability of US dollars in banks in addition to the decline in global wheat prices, according to a government official who spoke to Asharq earlier.

The country imported 6.8 million tons, compared to 5.3 million tons in the same period last year.

Garahy added that “The size of the country’s strategic wheat reserve reached 6.3 months, sugar for 13 months, oil enough for 6.2 months, frozen and live meat contracts enough for 10 months, and poultry contracts are enough for 10 months.”

Egypt usually buys up to 12 million tons of wheat annually from abroad for the public and private sectors.

The country was among the top wheat consumers in the 2023/2024 season with more than 20 million metric tons, representing 2.6 percent of global consumption, according to an October report issued by the US Department of Agriculture.
