Egypt to return US$3 bn in matured bonds to Qatar

A source at the Central Bank of Egypt said on Thursday that it will return US$3 billion in matured bonds to Qatar in 2014.

The source, who asked not to be named, said that the first batch of $500 million will be due in October and the second batch of $2.5 billion will be due in November.

Relations between Egypt and Qatar have been strained since the army ousted President Mohamed Morsy on 3 July 2013 after major protests against his rule.

Qatar is seen as a strong supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood, having provided Egypt with $7.5 billion in the year Morsy was in office.

In 2013, Egypt had returned $3 billion to Qatar after negotiations between the interim government and Qatari authorities to transfer them into bonds failed.
