Egypt reopens Sinai road blocked by gunmen

Egyptian police have restored traffic flow to the road linking Tor with Sharm el-Sheikh in the South Sinai Governorate after Bedouin gunmen blocked it on Saturday, a security source announced.

Security forces arrested the gunmen, who were later released following intervention by a number of Bedouin tribal chiefs, who promised that the incident would not recur.

Rioters had obstructed the road and burnt car tires in order to prevent travel to and from Sharm el-Sheikh. This caused vehicles to line up in a 6km queue and prompted drivers to call army and police forces for help.

This is the tenth incident of its kind in the province since the 25 January uprising, which forced former president Hosni Mubarak to step down in February.

Dozens of Bedouins staged protests during the uprising. They called for solving massive unemployment in the North Sinai Governorate and releasing Bedouin detainees who have been held for four years without trial.
