Egypt stressed its complete rejection of statements issued by high-level officials in the Israeli government regarding their intention to launch a military operation in the Palestinian city of Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip.
In a Sunday statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry warned of dire consequences especially in light of the risks it poses of exacerbating the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza Strip.
Egypt called for the necessity of uniting all international and regional efforts to prevent targeting Rafah, which now shelters approximately 1.4 million Palestinians displaced there because it is the last safe area in the Gaza Strip.
The statement said that targeting Rafah, and Israel’s continued obstruction of humanitarian aid, will further displace the Palestinian people and liquidate their cause – which comes in clear violation of international laws and the relevant resolutions of the Security Council and the United Nations General Assembly.
Egypt affirmed that it will continue working with various parties in order to reach an immediate ceasefire, enforce the truce, and exchange prisoners and detainees.
It called on influential international powers to intensify pressure on Israel to respond to these efforts, and to avoid taking measures that will further complicate the situation and harm the interests of everyone without exception.
