Egypt reiterates demands for Israel to join nuclear treaty

Egypt has renewed demands for Israel to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and for all its nuclear projects to be placed under the comprehensive safeguarding system of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

“Talks about dealing with nuclear threats to the Middle East should be associated with placing all nuclear constructions in the region, including Israeli constructions, under IAEA comprehensive guarantees,” said spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry Hossam Zaki. He noted the existence of an IAEA director's report concerning Israeli nuclear capabilities, due for impending discussion by an IAEA board of governors.

Zaki said he considered the continuing Israeli refusal to join the NPT, and the lack of any form of international monitoring of its nuclear constructions, to be a threat to nuclear non-proliferation in the Middle East.
