Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced Egypt’s intention to re-nominate Ahmed Abul-Gheit as Secretary-General of the Arab League for a second term of five years.
Sisi said he looks forward to the Arab leaders’ support for this nomination.
Sisi’s official spokesman Bassam Rady said that Abul-Gheit’s re-nomination is based on Egypt’s interest in and support for the work of the Arab League, as well as the president’s desire to provide all possible support to the organization.
Rady praised the Secretary-General’s conscious and wise management during his first term at the helm of the league, during an especially challenging phase in the Arab region.
Informed sources revealed that Egypt’s nomination of Abul-Gheit might be included as an additional item for discussion in the emergency Arab foreign ministers meeting scheduled for next week.
According to the charter of the Arab League, the Secretary-General’s renewal will be decided at the next Arab summit, which is scheduled to take place next March.
In case the summit is postponed again due to coronavirus, Arab leaders must authorize the Arab foreign ministers to resolve this matter through a meeting of the Arab League Council before the end of the Secretary-General’s first term at the end of June.
Abul-Gheit, who assumed the position of Secretary-General of the Arab League in June 2016, succeeding Nabil Al-Arabi, is the eighth Secretary General of the Arab League.
