Egypt ranks second after Morocco in terms of vaccination rates in Africa: minister

During a cabinet meeting held Tuesday, headed by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Health Minister Hala Zayed  shed light on the latest global developments of the coronavirus in terms of countries that recorded the highest daily death rates, as well as the position of vaccines on the African continent, noting that Egypt ranked second after Morocco in terms of vaccination rates on the African continent.

She also addressed the latest developments regarding the coronavirus, in terms of the number of weekly infections and the occupancy rates for isolation hospital beds.

Zayed reviewed the procedures for travelers coming to Egypt, explaining that these procedures have been updated in line with the procedures taken in many countries.

These involve receiving fully vaccinated visitors among the groups excluded from conducting a DNA test for the virus, allowing the entry of those who hold certificates of vaccination against the virus, provided that the certificate contains a QR Code, and that the type of vaccination used is one of the vaccinations approved by the World Health Organization or the Egyptian Drug Authority and that at least 14 days have passed since the last dose.

Holders of certificates are exempted from a PCR test upon arrival, while holders of vaccination certificates are not exempted from taking an ID test for those coming from countries affected by the mutated coronavirus.

Zayed reviewed the developments of manufacturing the Chinese “Sinovac” vaccine, and also referred to the current position of contracting and supplying vaccines to Egypt.

She explained that 943 scientific papers were published by Egypt on the coronavirus, and quotes from Egyptian research were used 7.935 times.

She added that Egyptian scientific research represented 24.5 percent of the total research conducted in Africa.

On Monday, the Ministry of Health and Population announced that 430 people recovering from the virus have been discharged from hospitals, bringing the total of those recovering from the virus to 210,482 to date.

Health Minister Spokesperson Khaled Megahed explained that 376 new cases were recorded, and 33 cases died.

Megahed stated that the total number that was registered in Egypt with the coronavirus until Monday is 280,770, including 210,482 cases that have been cured, and 16,125 deaths.
