Egypt, represented by Egyptian Computer Emergency Readiness Team (EG-CERT) affiliated with the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), has been included in the top category countries of the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) issued by the International Telecommunication Union for the years 2023-2024.
Egypt has been classified as a leading model to be emulated by other countries.
The Global Cybersecurity Index is concerned with measuring the extent of commitment to cybersecurity standards for the 194 member states of the Union.
Egypt was among only 12 countries that succeeded in achieving 100 points out of the total index points – out of 47 countries classified in the top category – compared to 95.48 points in 2020.
The index was based on five main dimensions in its classification:
- The legal axis, which is concerned with the availability of cybercrime legislation and cybersecurity regulations.
- The regulatory axis, which includes national cybersecurity strategies and the effectiveness of the entity responsible for cybersecurity in the member states of the Union.
- The cooperation axis, which covers cooperation efforts in the field of cybersecurity, as well as agreements and partnerships between the public and private sectors.
- The capacity building axis, which includes the readiness of cybersecurity specialists, mechanisms to support research and development, and launch awareness campaigns.
- The technical axis, which is concerned with response rates to cyber incidents.
Egypt’s progress in the index is one of the most important results of the National Cybersecurity Strategy (2023-2027), and the efforts made to develop human resources, build capacities, and qualify competencies and trained cadres in the information and communications technology fields.
EG-CERT plays an important role in enhancing and supporting cybersecurity and cooperating with international organizations and various countries, with an interest in raising public awareness of the cyber risks and threats individuals and institutions face.
