Egypt ranks 1st in global mullet fish production and 3rd with tilapia

The Head of Central Laboratory for Aquaculture Research (CLAR) Refaat al-Gamal, said that Egypt ranks first in the production of mullet fish and third with tilapia globally.

Egypt ranks sixth in the world in fish production in general, and is the foremost Arab and African country in fish production.

During an interview with dmc satellite channel on Saturday, Gamal said that Egypt produces two million tons of fish, with 1.6 million tons from fish farms, and 100,000 from the Mediterranean Sea.

The rest comes from the lakes and fish projects carried out by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, equivalent to what was accomplished over the past 30 years.

In his speech, he added that tilapia is one of the best types of fish, rich in omega-3 and amino acids that help in digestion and brain development for children.

Egyptian Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation al-Sayed al-Quseir said in November that Egypt has reached self-sufficiency in fish production.

Quseir added that there are major fish projects that have recently been opened, such as al-Fayrouz, al-Diba and Berket Ghalioun project for fish farming

Egypt produces more than 2.2 million tons of fish with a great deal of self-sufficiency, and now exports its fish wealth, he added.
