Egypt’s Prosecutor General Hamada al-Sawy on Sunday referred a Jordanian national and two Egyptians to criminal court for holding a party at New Cairo’s al-Rehab city during curfew hours.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced in April that Egypt’s curfew hours were shortened during Ramadan to start at nine pm instead of eight pm, and last until six am, as part of precautionary measures to limit the novel coronavirus outbreak.
A monitoring unit at the prosecutor general’s office and the investigative unit of the First Settlement Police Department had received various complaints from citizens against the three defendants for violating the curfew.
One of the accused admitted a party had been organized on April 14 but insisted it had ended before curfew began, while the other two defendants claimed they were at the villa to attend the Iftar meal there.
The prosecution had followed up on resident complaints of parties during Ramadan month. They seized a video clip showing a gathering of 20 people around a dancer at the villa from the Facebook page “al-Rehab city residents.”
Another clip was also seized showing the defendants and other people speaking through a loudspeaker.
