Egypt postpones review of Treason Law

The Administrative Court of the State Council on Tuesday put off reviewing a case that calls for the implementation of the Treason Law, judicial sources said on Tuesday. The review is now scheduled to take place on 11 October.

Proponents of the law say it can be used to try former regime figures accused of harming the state's interests during the reign of ousted President Hosni Mubarak.

A suit to repeal the law was filed by an Egyptian NGO against the minister of justice.

The law, issued after the 1952 revolution, was approved by the Egyptian government on 17 August following the introduction of some amendments to it.

The amended law was submitted to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces for approval.

Any employee, minister, or MP who has corrupted political life, harmed the interests of the country, violated laws or abused power to achieve personal gains may be punished under this law.
