The Egyptian House of Representatives approved a draft law amending the traffic law to increase license plate fees to LE600 instead of LE115, license tuk-tuks, create a new quadricycle vehicle to transport people, and establish new regulations for dealing with dilapidated and abandoned cars.
During a plenary session on Sunday, Representative Ali al-Assas reviewed the Defense Committee’s report on amendments to the traffic law.
He said that the Interior Ministry is working to implement an integrated electronic traffic system, through digital transformation in all service sectors and raising the level of traffic safety.
The ministry is working on producing secure, non-forgeable traffic plates that carry signs that are difficult to forge, and that are compatible with the smart transportation system, he said.
Assas added: “Within the framework of implementing the state plan aimed at developing the transportation system and providing safe vehicles to maintain the safety of citizens, the Interior Ministry is seeking to find serious solutions to confront the spread of tuk-tuks, which have become present throughout all governorates, and have caused an increase in rates of the crime.”
He continued, “It was proposed to create a small means of transportation that moves at a medium speed, which could replace tuk-tuk, and run outside the main roads, according to the itineraries determined by the governors.”
Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Alaa Fouad, said that the Prime Minister’s decision to amend some provisions of the Traffic Law, issued by Law #66 of 1973, aims to legalize the conditions of tuk-tuks to confront all forms of lawlessness.
“There are those who commit a crime using a tuk-tuk, and the legalization or licensing aims to confront any form of circumventing the law or replacing the license plate,” he noted.
The parliament also approved the creation of a light, quadricycle vehicle, subject to the special provisions for tuk-tuk vehicles, during the discussion of amendments to the traffic law submitted by the government.
