Egypt opens urgent investigation into tourist allegedly restoring mural at Luxor

Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has decided to open an urgent investigation into a short video clip circulated online showing a tourist allegedly assisting in restoring a mural at Luxor Temple.

The video shows a tourist holding a brush, as if participating in the restoration of one of the mural scenes at Luxor Temple with the help of one of the technical workers present at the temple.

The investigation aims to verify the truth of what happened and take all necessary legal measures against those responsible, a ministry statement said on Tuesday.

Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy stressed that the ministry will not hesitate to take all necessary measures against anything that harms the ancient Egyptian civilization and its antiquities.

The ministry is playing its role as a guardian of Egypt’s antiquities to preserve them and Egypt’s cultural and civilizational heritage, he assured.

The ministry indicated that the material used in the circulated video are those that are actually used in cleaning ancient stone surfaces and are not harmful to the artifacts.
