The Egyptian Journalists Syndicate announced its nomination of Palestinian journalist Wael al-Dahdouh for the 2024 UNESCO/ Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.
The award, first established in 1997, is given to a person, organization or institution that has made significant contributions to defending or strengthening press freedom even under danger.
The head of the syndicate Khaled al-Balshy, submitted Dahdouh’s nomination form to UNESCO on Thursday, which detailed his professional career and what he faced under Israel’s assault of Gaza.
Balshy pointed out that Dahdouh’s nomination comes to honor those who died for the Palestinian press, paying with their lives to convey the truth and exposing the crimes of genocide.
He noted that they also exposed, with their steadfastness, the false Zionist narrative and the lies of the Western media, and triumphed for the truth.
The head of the Egyptian Journalists Syndicate confirmed that the nomination comes in appreciation of Dahdouh’s personal sacrifices.
Balshy pointed out that the occupation killed Dahdouh’s wife, two of his sons, and his grandson – but he still insisted on performing his professional journalistic work regardless.
He continued that this is what Dahdouh repeated after he and his colleague, the late Samer Abu Daqqa, were directly targeted – all in order to ensure the truth about the war on Gaza reaches the world.
