Egypt to negotiate prices of gas exports to Israel this month

Minister of Petroleum Abdullah Ghorab said he has not conducted negotiations with an Israeli delegation that visited Cairo last week over the prices of Egyptian gas exports to Israel.

Ghorab added that official negotiations in this regard will begin this month in Cairo to review the gas deal, adding that it is too early to jump to conclusions.

The negotiations will be between the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) on one side and the East Mediterranean Gas Company (EMG), the company supplying the gas, on the other.

Israeli media had last week reported that the Israeli delegation which visited Cairo discussed a number of issues with Egyptian officials, including keeping the price of Egyptian gas exports at its current level.

Official sources form the Petroleum Ministry said Egypt sent official memorandums to EGAS and the Israelis calling for the need to review prices of gas this month. Meanwhile, a deal signed between EGAS, EGPC and EMG – signed in 2009 – states that prices may be reviewed in 2013.
