Mahmoud al-Gohary, former coach of the Egyptian national team and adviser to the Jordanian Football Association, died Monday morning at the age of 74 after having a brain hemorrhage Friday.
Gohary was rushed to a hospital in Amman Friday and underwent medical examinations after his health deteriorated.
Born 20 February 1938, Gohary was a member of the Egyptian national team when Egypt won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1959. Gohary was awarded the top scorer trophy in the same championship after scoring a hat trick in Egypt’s match against Ethiopia.
Gohary is the only African player who won the Africa Cup of Nations as a player and then as a coach in 1998.
Gohary helped Egypt qualify for the World Cup finals in 1990 for the second time in its history.
