Egypt, Libya consider reopening Salloum crossing

A delegation of Libyan security officials discussed yesterday with Governor of Matrouh, Major General Alaa Abu Zeid, the reopening of the Salloum border crossing for Egyptian trucks.

The trucks could be accompanied by a security convoy until they reach Tobruk, a calm and stable area in Libya. The suggestion was submitted to Prime Minister Ibrahim Mehleb, who will participate a videoconference on Wednesday, to discuss the actions taken to secure the trucks on Libyan territory, until they reach the port of Massaed, and the possibility of extending security until Tobruk.

Both sides will study establishing rest and storage areas for trucks to prevent overcrowding and disorganization, Abu Zeid said.

The consultations are aimed at maintaining the source of livelihood for many Egyptians and truck owners, as well as Salloum residents, many of whom rely on the border crossing, according to Abu Zeid.
