Egypt, Jordan adopt firm stance against displacement of Palestinians – official

AMMAN, Feb 2 (MENA) – Second Deputy Speaker of the Jordanian Parliament Ahmad Hamaysat lauded on Sunday the statement issued by the Arab foreign ministers on Saturday in which they reiterated rejection of the displacement of the Palestinians.

The meeting, called for by Egypt, was attended by the foreign ministers of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar in addition to the PLO executive committee secretary and the Arab League chief.

Speaking to MENA, Hamaysat said the meeting’s timing is very critical in light of repeated attempts and suggestions to displace the Palestinians from their land and relocate them to Egypt and Jordan.

Both Egypt and Jordan have a firm and strong stance against such proposals, he said, adding that both countries are working for the sake of the Palestinian cause and exerting efforts to foil attempts to liquidate the Palestinian issue.

He underlined the need to maintain coordination between Egypt and Jordan at all levels to face attempts to displace the Palestinians from their land.

He stressed that Egypt and Jordan will never accept any temporary or long-standing displacement of Palestinians, referring to the two countries’ pivotal role across the years to establish a just and comprehensive peace and set up an independent Palestinian state with east Jerusalem as its capital.

He called on those parties advocating the relocation of Palestinians to Egypt and Jordan to recall the scenes depicting Palestinians while returning, many of them on foot, from the southern parts of the Gaza Strip to their homes in the northern parts to see by themselves that those people will never leave their land.

Participants in the Saturday meeting welcomed the recent Gaza ceasefire agreement, which included the exchange of captives and detainees. They praised the efforts of Egypt and Qatar in mediating the agreement and acknowledged the role of the United States.

The ministers expressed hope for continued cooperation with the US administration in pursuing a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East based on the two-state solution. (MENA)
