Egypt has joined a letter addressed to the United Nations to urge for imposing a ban on the export of weapons to Israel that could be used against the Palestinian people in the occupied Palestinian territories, including Al Quds (occupied East Jerusalem).
The letter, addressed to the UN secretary general, the president of the Security Council and the president of the General Assembly, is signed by 52 governments along with the Arab League (AL) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates.
Egypt was part of the core group that worked to mobilize countries to sign the letter, which comes within the framework of the intensive international efforts to pressure Israel to stop its ongoing violations of international law and international humanitarian law, the ministry added in a statement.
It has also been calling on the international community to assume its responsibilities to stop Israeli violations against the Palestinian people and to provide them with the necessary protection, according to the ministry.
The letter highlights the serious Israeli violations of international law in the occupied Palestinian territories, and calls for immediate steps to stop arms exports to Israel as an important step in line with the relevant UN resolutions to put an end to the serious violations committed against the Palestinian people.
The letter calls on the UNSC to play its role in achieving international peace and security, and to take tangible measures to protect civilians and ensure accountability.
