Egypt has raised preparation readiness for the upcoming International Maritime Organization (IMO) elections in London scheduled for the end of November.
Egypt has “C” classification membership according to the 2017 elections, where Egypt succeeded in winning its membership by sweep victory, with 133 votes from the total 160 countries with the right to vote.
Egypt ranked sixth in a ranking higher than the previous elections, where it occupied seventh place.
Transport Minister Kamel al-Wazir ordered full cooperation with the head of the Suez Canal Authority Mohab Mamish, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Maritime Navigation Chambers to prepare Egypt for the biennial elections.
A number of regional countries are preparing to compete against Egypt for the C seat, mostly held by Egypt since the seat was founded in the 1960s and lost once in 2013.
The Transport Ministry’s action plan in the elections depends on Egypt’s privileged maritime position and the Suez Canal, which is the largest shipping corridor in the world with 8 percent of the world’s ships passing through it.
