Egypt is 1st in Arab world, 3rd in Africa in terms of population increase

An assistant professor at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Infertility at the Kasr al-Ainy Faculty of Medicine, Amr Hassan, said that Egypt is the 14th country in the world in terms of population increase, the first in the Arab world and the third in Africa after Nigeria and Ethiopia.

During an interview with Sada al-Balad satellite channel on Tuesday, he said that the number of births in Egypt during last year reached 2.2 million.

Hassan said that the number of births in Egypt annually exceeds two million, equivalent to roughly half of the births in the entire European continent which gives birth to five million children annually.

Egypt’s population rose by one million in nine months and five days, he noted.

Hassan stressed that the demographic problem is the main issue, due to the increase in informality and unplanned housing and the decrease in the quality of education.

From 2018 to 2050, Egypt will become the seventh highest country in the world to achieve a population increase by 69.5 million people, he added.
