Egypt inaugurates 270 mn-euro wind turbine plant

Egypt’s Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mohamed Shaker opened an EU-funded wind turbine station for electricity production at a total cost of 270 million euros on Sunday.

A statement by the ministry said the plant, implemented over 30 months at Zeit Bay in the Red Sea, is the biggest in the Middle East region, adding that it would produce 800 gigawatts of electricity annually.

The project was funded by the government of Germany, the European Commission, the European Investment Bank and the KFW Development Bank.

The ambassadors from the European Union, Spain and Germany were all present at the inauguration.

The ministry says it aims to contribute 20 percent of renewable energy resources to the country's total energy production by 2022.
