The Egyptian committee formed to repatriate assets frozen abroad has commissioned a Swiss law firm to follow-up on official Swiss investigations into three former figures of the Mubark regime.
Alaa Mubarak, son of ousted President Hosni Mubarak, former Tourism Minister Zoheir Garana and businessman Yasin Mansour are all believed to have laundered money to Switzerland.
The committee was formed in the wake of Hosni Mubarak’s resignation in February in an effort to reclaim money stolen from the country, and aims to return some US$340 million belonging to the president’s sons.
The defense team for the former regime figures requested the Swiss attorney general not to allow the committee to follow up on the investigations.
The committee is also reviewing documents proving that fugitive business tycoon Hussein Salem, together with his son and daughter, transferred some LE24 billion out of the country.
