Epidemiological surveillance officer at the WHO office in Cairo Omar Aboul Ata said that Egypt has not yet reached the peak of coronavirus infections.
“We have a golden opportunity to reduce rates of infection with the coronavirus that we must seize,” Aboul Ata said during a telephone interview on the television program “Ala Masouleyety” (On My Responsibility) on the satellite channel Sada al-Balad.
He added that the number of COVID-19 infections reached 3,032 in the ninth week after detecting Egypt’s first coronavirus case, pointing out that the health system was helping make sure the situation does not deteriorate.
Precautionary measures taken by Egypt have helped reduce the rate of infections, Aboul Ata said, explaining that combatting the virus requires collective efforts that include the Ministry of Health and all members of Egyptian society.
Aboul Ata said that countries that have taken the virus lightly are suffering from higher infection rates. He also stressed that no country has a surveillance system enabling it to detect all infected cases.
Egypt on Sunday confirmed that the total number of fully-recovered coronavirus cases rose to 732, all of whom have been discharged from isolation hospitals. Thirty-one cases left quarantine on Sunday.
According to Health Ministry Spokesperson Khaled Megahed, 112 new coronavirus cases were confirmed on Sunday, bringing the country’s number of confirmed total cases so far to 3,144.
The total number of COVID-19 deaths has now reached 239 nationwide, after announcing fifteen deaths.
