Egyptian Ambassador to France Alaa Youssef said that the Egyptian Consulate General in Paris is following up on the death of researcher Reem Hamed on Thursday evening.
The Egyptian ambassador added that the Consulate General immediately contacted the French authorities upon learning of the news, which confirmed that investigations are underway to determine the cause of death.
The ambassador continued: “The mission is also closely following up on the procedures with the French side to issue the prosecution report to determine the cause of death, and the French death certificate so that the body can be transferred to Egypt, based on the request of the deceased’s family who are communicating with the consulate.”
The head of the Egyptian community in France, Saleh Farhoud, said in statements reported by Egyptian media that the body of Hamed was found in front of her residence in Paris.
Farhoud noted that she had received threats on her social media pages before the incident, raising concerns amongst the Egyptian community there.
Hamed held a bachelor’s degree in biotechnology from Cairo University, he noted, and a master’s degree in genomics from the University of Paris-Saclay, where she was conducting her research to obtain her PHD degree.
